  • Blue light / glare
What is blue light? And why is too much screen time bad for me?

Blue light is not just emitted by computers and LED lights - it’s actually all around us. In fact, sunlight is the main source of blue light. When you walk outside during the daytime, you’re exposed to blue light.

Light is measured in wavelength, the units of which are nanometers (nm) and millimetres (mm). Visible light has a wavelength range in the region of 400 to 760nm, with high energy visible (HEV) light falling somewhere between 400 - 500nm. It’s called high energy visible light because the blue/violet band of the visible spectrum has a particularly high frequency.

Our eyes are not really designed to be good at blocking blue light. That’s why blue light has been linked to something called Computer Vision Syndrome, a condition which encompasses a range of symptoms including headaches, blurred vision and eye strain amongst others.

Blue light can also disrupt your natural sleep cycle. Blue light tells your body when we need to be awake - at sunrise for example. However, when you are exposed to artificial blue light it can affect your physiology in unnatural ways. Studies show that looking at screens can interfere with the production of melatonin, the chemical responsible for helping you sleep.

Do LUMES reduce glare from screens?

Glare emitted from different sources of light such as digital screens, artificial light and even sunlight. It usually makes you squint your eyes and can give you a headache - especially if you view bright screens in a dark room. It’s one of the main causes of Digital Eye Strain (DES) and can lead to symptoms such as dry eyes, blurred vision, and headaches.

LUMES lenses have an Anti-Glare Coating which reduces the buildup of reflections on the front surface of the lens and prevents 99.9% of glare from entering your eyes. This keeps your eyes feeling relaxed and sharpens the optical quality of your screen.

Tip: we always recommend doing computer work in a brightly lit room to reduce the unpleasant effects of glare.

  • Fit / sizing
How do I know if the glasses fit me?
Keep these tips in mind when choosing which pair of LUMES would best suit you:
    1. 1. Glasses should stay put on your nose.
    2. 2. Your eyebrows should be slightly above the frame.
    3. 3. The bottom of the frame should not rest on your cheeks.
    4. 4. Your pupils should be aligned near the center of your lenses.

We encourage you to try out our Instagram Virtual Try On which can be found on the product pages to see which style best suits your face shape.

Where can I find the measurements of your different frames?

You can find the measurements of our frames on each individual product page. They will be listed in the format lens diameter - bridge width - arm length (e.g. 52 - 20 - 145). All measurements are represented in millimetres.

My glasses feel like they do not fit properly? What can I do?

Our frames are made of malleable material, allowing you to mould your glasses to your unique face shape. LUMES are designed to accommodate almost all face shapes, but in the rare case that LUMES frames do not fit your face shape, you can gently mould your frames' temple arms to fit your individual measurements.

You can adjust them yourself or take them to an optical provider who have the proper instruments for adjustments.

  • Prescription glasses

    Do you offer prescription lenses?

No, currently we do not offer prescription lenses for our glasses. However, you can pair LUMES with contact lenses to do digital work more comfortably.

  • Non-prescription / non-Rx glasses

Can anyone wear computer glasses? Even if I don’t need prescription glasses?

Of course! If you have 20/20 vision and don’t need to wear prescription glasses, you can still suffer from digital eye strain due to prolonged screen use. Computer glasses can help to make looking at screens easier on your eyes by eliminating glare and filtering out high-energy visible light from your screen. Think about it this way: sunglasses protect your eyes from the sun's UV rays, computer glasses protect your eyes from the blue light from screens.

    Do your lenses have magnification?

LUMES lenses do not have magnification. All frames come with high-quality CR-39 lenses which sharpen the image of your screen to help your eyes feel more relaxed.

Can I order new lenses for my current LUMES frames?

No, currently we do not sell lenses individually.

  • Lens technology

What makes LUMES different from competitors?

Digital screens emit high-energy visible light which is also known as blue light. This shorter wavelength light (400-430 nanometers) contains more energy which can irritate your eyes. LUMES lenses block 90% of blue light at 400nm and 40% at 430nm to protect your eyes from the negative effects of prolonged screen use. You can find out more on our Lens Technology page.

Unlike other brands, LUMES use premium CR-39 lenses that block up to 90% of the highest energy (blue) light from screens. Our lenses also prevent 99.9% of glare to reduce headaches and eye fatigue from screens. And before we forget, they’re anti-scratch too!

Are there any negative side effects?

Nope, there are no negative side effects to wearing your LUMES. Our eyes were never meant to stare at screens all day, so wearing our blue light blocking lenses can only help to make your screen time more comfortable and productive.

Can I wear LUMES when I’m not in front of a screen?

Yes! We designed LUMES to be comfortable to wear at all times—whether you’re at the office or on the go. Of course, you’ll see the real benefits of our glasses when you’re in front of your laptop or phone.

  • Glasses care

What is the best way to clean my glasses?

All pairs of LUMES glasses come with a microfiber cloth which can be used to clean your lenses. The microfiber cloth should be sufficient for cleaning any smudges or dirt from the lenses.

We do NOT recommend using any chemical-based cleaners on the lenses as this can affect the Anti-Reflective coating.

Do LUMES glasses come with a case?

Yes, all pairs of LUMES glasses come with a sturdy case to keep your glasses safe when you’re on the move.
